The way to get more contractor leads without buying shared leads is to own the places homeowners look for you: your own Google Ads, your Google Business Profile in the Maps pack, Local Services Ads, a website that turns visits into calls, and a steady ask for reviews and referrals. Those leads come to you alone. Then answer them fast and track every call, so you know which source books jobs and can put more money there.
Here is why shared leads cost more than they look, and how to replace them one channel at a time.
Why shared leads hurt
A shared lead is one homeowner’s request sold to several contractors. The moment it lands, you are in a race. The homeowner gets a wave of calls in a few minutes. They pick whoever reached them first or sounded best, and often stop answering everyone else.
That creates three problems.
You compete on speed and price, not fit. The homeowner has several quotes before you have seen the job. Price becomes the easy way to choose.
You pay for leads you never had a real chance at. Wrong service, outside your area, tire kickers, people who filled in a form to see a price. Some services credit bad leads. Many make it hard.
You build nothing. When you stop paying, the leads stop. No ranking, no reviews, no audience, no account history. Every month starts from zero.
Shared leads can fill a gap while you build something better. They should not be the plan.
Own your search traffic with Google Ads
When a homeowner types “roof repair near me” or “concrete driveway contractor” plus their town, they are telling you what they need and where. Google Ads lets you show up for exactly those searches and nothing else.
A lead from your own campaign is yours alone. The homeowner clicked your ad, landed on your page and called your number. Nobody else got the same lead.
The work is in the setup. Keywords tied to each service and town. A long list of negative keywords to keep out job seekers, DIY searches and services you do not offer. A landing page for each service. Call tracking so every call is counted. We go deeper in Google Ads for contractors: what actually books jobs, and you can see how we run it on our contractor Google Ads page.
Show up in the Maps pack
The three map listings that appear above most local results take a large share of clicks for “near me” searches. That spot comes from your Google Business Profile, not your website alone.
What moves it:
- The right primary category, and secondary categories for each service you offer.
- A service area that matches where you really work.
- Real photos of real jobs, added regularly.
- Reviews, steady over time, with replies.
- A website with a page for each service that matches your profile.
Every call from the Maps pack is a lead you do not share. It costs nothing per click. It does take consistent work, which is why many contractors let it slide. Our guide to contractor SEO, service pages and the Maps pack covers it step by step.
Add Local Services Ads
Local Services Ads sit at the very top of many home service searches with a Google badge. You pay per lead, but the lead comes from your listing to your phone. It is not resold to the next company.
They work well for trades Google supports, and they pair well with regular Google Ads. You will need to pass Google’s screening, keep your reviews up and dispute leads that do not fit. More on that in our guide to Google Local Services Ads for contractors.
Build a website that turns visits into calls
Ads and Maps send people to your site. The site decides if they call. The basics that matter most for contractors:
- Your phone number at the top, tappable on a phone.
- A short form for people who would rather not call.
- One page per service, with photos of your own work.
- The towns you serve, written plainly.
- Proof: real reviews, licence, years doing the work if you can show it.
- Fast loading on a phone.
A site that misses these quietly wastes every other channel.
Use Facebook to reach homeowners before they search
Search catches people who already know they need you. Facebook and Instagram reach homeowners in your area before they start searching. That works best for visual, planned projects: remodeling, outdoor living, landscaping, painting, concrete patios.
The leads are colder, so speed and follow-up matter more. A Facebook lead form plus a fast call back is the usual pattern. Our contractor Facebook ads page explains how we set it up.
Ask for reviews and referrals on purpose
Happy customers are the cheapest lead source you have. Most contractors do not ask often enough.
Make it a step in the job, not an afterthought. When the work is done and the customer is pleased, send a short text with a direct link to your Google review page. Ask in person too. A review helps your Maps ranking and your close rate at the same time.
Referrals work the same way. Tell finished customers you grow by word of mouth and that you would value a name. Thank people who send work.
Answer fast
Speed to lead decides more jobs than any ad. A homeowner who calls three companies usually books the first one that picks up and sounds like they know the work.
If you are on a roof or a job site all day, set up a system: a person, a service or a call forward that makes sure someone answers. For form leads, call back within minutes, not hours. Text if they do not pick up.
Track every call to its source
You cannot grow what you cannot see. Use call tracking numbers for each channel so you know which calls came from Google Ads, Maps, Local Services Ads, Facebook or your website. Then mark which ones turned into booked jobs.
After a few months you will know which source books work at a cost that makes sense, and which one just makes the phone ring. That is when you can move money with confidence.
